3. a special note about children
Children (persons under the age of 18) are not eligible to use the Site. If you are under 18, have your mom take you to the airport; don’t use hitchsters.
4. information we collect
Our primary purpose in collecting personal information is for tweaking our Site and our services, for connecting you with our car service partner, and for improving our marketing efforts so as to better reach current and potential customers, as well as for increasing the level of safety between two users sharing a cab. We only collect personal information that helps us accomplish these two goals.
We keep track of the information you enter on our Site. We use this information to do internal research on how to optimize our Site and to help us better understand, protect and serve you and our community. Other information we keep track of may include the URL that you just came from (whether this URL is on our Site or not), which URL you next go to (whether this URL is on our Site or not), your computer browser information and your IP address.
We may in the future use data collection devices such as "cookies" on certain pages of our Site to help analyze our web page flow, measure promotional effectiveness, and promote trust and safety. "Cookies" are small files placed on your hard drive that assist us in providing our services. We offer certain features that are only available through the use of a "cookie". Cookies can also help us provide information that is targeted to your interests. Most cookies are "session cookies" (except for chocolate chip cookies, which are delicious), meaning that they are automatically deleted from your hard drive at the end of a session. You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, although in that case you may not be able to use certain features on our Site.
We currently do not charge anything for the services we provide (our car service partner will charge according to the price list included on our site, however). However, if in the future we begin providing fee-based services, we may collect additional information, such as a billing address, a credit card number and a credit card expiration date, as well as other information necessary for a user profile.
If you choose to post messages or to leave feedback for us, we will retain such information you provide. We retain this information as necessary to provide customer support and troubleshoot problems.
If you send us personal correspondence, such as e-mails or letters, or if other users or third parties send us correspondence about your activities or postings on our Site, we may collect such information into a file specific to you.
5. our disclosure of your information
We do not sell or rent any of your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes. However, the following describes some of the potential scenarios in which that the information we collect may, in some instances, be disclosed.
car service partner
In order to connect you with our car service partner (in the event you have requested one), we provide them with your cell phone number and first name.
We aggregate (gather up data across all users) usage information and disclose such information in a non-personally identifiable manner to advertisers and other third parties for our marketing and promotional purposes. However, in these situations, we do not disclose to these entities any information that could be used to identify you personally, and we do not disclose your e-mail address or your cell phone number.
hitchsters cooperates with law enforcement inquiries, as well as with other third parties, to enforce laws and rights that help protect you and the hitchsters community from bad actors. As a feature to help facilitate trust between co-riders, we endeavor to preserve the cell phone numbers that correspond to the matches. Therefore, in response to a verified request by law enforcement or other government officials relating to a criminal investigation or alleged illegal activity, we can (and you authorize us to) disclose your cell phone number and other information without a subpoena. Without limiting the above, in an effort to respect your privacy and our ability to keep the community free from bad actors, we will not otherwise disclose your personal information to law enforcement or other government officials without a subpoena, court order or substantially similar legal procedure, except when we believe in good faith that the disclosure of information is necessary to prevent imminent physical harm or financial loss, or to report suspected illegal activity.
6. your use of other users' information
In order to facilitate interaction among all hitchsters community members, our Site allows you limited access a co-rider’s cell phone number and e-mail address.
By entering into our User Agreement, you agree that, with respect to other users' personal information that you obtain through the Site or through a hitchsters-related communication or hitchsters-facilitated transaction, hitchsters hereby grants to you a license to use such information only for hitchsters-related communications (which may not include, among other things, unsolicited commercial messages). In addition, except as a precautionary measure to let a third party know that you are going to be sharing a taxi, under no circumstances can you disclose personal information about another user to any third party without our consent and the consent of that user. You agree that other users may use your personal information to communicate with you in accordance with the purposes of hitchsters. Note that law enforcement personnel and other rights holders are given different rights with respect to information they access.
7. use of e-mail tools
You may not use our matching system, the e-mail-a-friend feature or other services that we offer to send spam or otherwise send content that would violate our User Agreement. We do not permanently store e-mail messages or the e-mail addresses sent from the e-mail-a-friend feature, and nor do we rent or sell such e-mail addresses.
Your information is stored on hitchsters’ servers located in the United States. We use procedural and technical safeguards to protect your personal information against loss or theft as well as unauthorized access and disclosure to protect your privacy. We treat data as an asset that must be protected against loss and unauthorized access. We employ many different security techniques to protect such data from unauthorized access by users inside and outside the company. However, "perfect security" does not exist on the Internet.
